Key Biscayne K-8 InitiativesRebuilding of elementary structures (buildings 1, 2 and 3)Structures built in 1955 - 1996, with 384 student stations, have reached life expectancy. Electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and lighting are among the issues in need of resolution. An engineering study, commissioned by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, recomends demolition and rebuilding of these structures. See update. School Capacity and growth projectionsTo accommodate an increase in student population and class size amendment requirements, certain labs, resource rooms and storage rooms have been turned into classrooms, changing the makeup of the original design to accommodate growth and limiting physical capacity to provide electives or advanced courses. Equalization of curriculum offeringsAs a K-8 Center, The curriculum offered at the Key Biscayne K-8 Center is inferior to those offered at traditional middle schools in the Miami-Dade School District. This is due to how M-DCPS allocates funding to K-8 Centers vs. regular elementary or middle schools. Read about meeting and follow up letter to Mr. Barrera, Chair of M-DCPS' School Board, referring to these issues. |
